FG EARMARKS N.2BN FOR MADE –IN-NIGERIA CAMPAIGN - 2009-10-16 05:00:00

The Minister of Commerce and Industry Chief Achike  Udenwa  recently in Abuja  stated that the Federal Government will spend the sum of N200 million to offset the campaign for made- in- Nigeria goods which will be officially declared open by President   Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

The Minister said the campaign will subsequently be launched in the six  geo political zones of the country, all states capital and in the 774 local government areas across the nation.
The campaign is a developmental strategy of the FG to launch Nigeria on the map of the 20 most developed nation in the year 2020.
The Minister stressed that that Made- in- Nigeria Campaign is not just another slogan but a  developmental strategy  carefully planned by the ministry towards revamping the economy.
He stated that it is part of the government seven point agenda of creating wealth and employment generation for Nigerians.
Udenwa called on Nigerians to embrace the campaign especially at this period when the country is witnessing unprecedented unemployment in the country especially with the disarmament in the Niger Delta region.
He said Nigerians were particularly obsessed with foreign products which cannot help the economy out of the woods
He advised  Nigerians  to cultivate the habit of having pride in locally manufactured goods  which will grow the economy rather spend it on frivolous foreign goods.
Udenwa said with a change of attitude and mentality in consumption the economy will change for the better.
He dispelled the insinuation that locally produced goods were inferior to imported goods.
He added, “Today, Nigerian goods are being faked abroad and brought back to be sold in the country, if the locally produced are   of low quality then foreigners will have no reason to fake made in Nigerian goods.”
He stated that what our local manufacturers need were patronages which according to him will raise the quality of the locally made goods.
