SHOPPING

In Nigeria is predominantly informal at various open markets which are quite close by the city suburbs and villages. In most cities, towns and villages, special market days are held where good bargains are available. Hawking also forms and integral aspect of shopping in the country.

 
TELECOMMUNICATION

Nigeria is the most competitive telecommunications market in Africa. She operates mobile and fixed-line telephone networks.
Mobile telephone is operated by Globacom, Celtel, MTN and Mtel. Mubadala Development Corporation of United Arab Emirates holds Nigeria’s fifth mobile telephone license.
More than 50 companies’ fixed-line telephone companies support Nigeria’s two national carriers (NITEL and Globacom). Strong demand for Internet services and broadband capabilities is aiding the development of the fixed-line sector.
Majority of new lines is provided by fixed-wireless systems, and a new unified licensing regime introduced in 2006 has intensified the competition between fixed and mobile operators in Nigeria.

TIME

Nigeria is one hour ahead of the GMT.

CURRENCY

The national currency, the Naira and Kobo (N1 = 100K) is available in the following denominations; N1,000, N200, N100, N50, N20, N10, N5 (Notes) N1, 50K, 25K, 10K, 5K and 1K (Coins). However as a result of their very low purchasing power values, coins are hardly in circulation.
 
CLIMATE
 
Two seasons, Dry and Wet seasons prevails throughout the year. The southern parts exhibits humid tropical climate while the North exhibits sub-Sahara dry climate. Wet Season is between April and September with regular rainfall, while the dry season is between September and April. Average Temperature is: 32 – 40 (Dry Season) 18 – 30 (Wet Season)
ELECTRICITY
The standard electricity supply in Nigerian is 220/230 volts AC.
PUBLIC HOLIDAYS
All Christian and Islamic holidays are observed. In addition, the following holidays are also observed:
  • New Years Day; January 1
  • May Day; May 1
  • Children’s Day; May 27
  • Independence Day; October 1
  • Democracy Day May 29

POLITICAL STRUCTURE

Nigeria is grouped politically into 36 States asides from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
Some states of the federation declare holidays at their discretion.
